Instead of withdrawing to a peaceful retirement on his comfortable Oyster Bay estate, Roosevelt instead embarked upon a death defying exploration of the Amazon basin. This book is a narrative of that journey.While this story is merely a short chapter in the incredible life of Roosevelt, it is an excellent indicator of his view of life and his character. For those who have read more comprehensive biographies of Roosevelt, many of the details of the journey will not be surprising. In my opinion, Roosevelt (along with perhaps Benjamin Franklin) is the most "American" of all historical Americans. From a childhood marked by poor health and personal tragedy, Roosevelt rehabilitated both his physical and emotional beings through a succession of personal tests. Cattle ranching on the plains of the unsettled Dakota badlands, leading the Roughrider charge on San Juan Hill, winning the Presidency, African safaris and finally charting the previously undiscovered Rio du Duvida (River of Doubt) were a series of challenges confronted and ultimately conquered by Roosevelt. I feel strongly that it is only the absence of a history defining event during his Presidency that prevents him from being held in the same regard as Lincoln and Washington in our pantheon of Presidents (he is after all on Mount Rushmore).In addition to setting out the seemingly impossible obstacles facing the expedition (hostile Indians, miserable weather, poor provisioning, debilitating disease, maddening insect infestation and other hazardous animal life), the book does an outstanding job of introducing the reader to other important members of the expedition, most importantly, Brazilian explorer and naturalist Colonel Candido Rondon and Roosevelt's son Kermit.If you enjoy this type of story, I would highly recommend Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose, which details the Lewis and Clark expedition.

This was Candice Millard's first book of history and biography, and it was made for her.Millard's style is to take a major figure in history and focus on a single, often obscure slice of the figure's life. In her book on Churchill, it was his early adventures and the Boer Wars in South Africa. Here, she takes an historical look at Theodore Roosevelt's adventures in the Amazon Basin after his two terms as President and his devastating loss for a third term in the three-way race in 1912.River of Doubt is a wonderful story of adventure and misadventure. Its backdrop is a tributary, previously unexplored by Westerners, of the Amazon. It has everything a reader would want: the mysteries and terror of the jungle, the incredible and deadly complexity of the river, the inept preparations for the adventure, the wild and unknown Indians of the region, needless deaths, murder, history, and the bigger-than-life story of the aging Teddy, his son, Kermit, and the rest of the exploration party.I enjoyed it totally. Millard's Churchill book was good, but it suffered from often static setting, mostly in a Boer prison. This book has a built-in momentum, as the ill-prepared group make their way down the river into the unknown. It is the perfect story for Candice Millard, and she tells it perfectly.

I heard Candice Millard on a John Grishham book tour podcast and was intrigued by her background and the meticulous research behind her books. (My gosh, the one she DIDN'T write about Ben Franklin - and why - says worlds about the authenticity this author brings to the table!)This tale of Roosevelt's ill-conceived and ill-fated expedition through the Amazon reads almost as much like a novel as a documentary. I particularly enjoyed the insights into Roosevelt's personality - his earliest motivations and his rigorous discipline to refuse the hand early life dealt him. The same could be said of Captain Rondon, the Brazilian lead on the trip.The science and history lessons are so integral to the story (or the story is so inherent in the science and history) that you'll likely find yourself smarter and wiser and more emotionally attuned to both nature and human nature for having read this book.

What a wonderful book!! Having read previous biographies of "Teedy" I came to this book with an already favorable image of this man who overcame severe asthma in childhood and, indeed, met all obstacles with a sense of perseverance and a firm belief that one must grasp life with both hands and always do the best with the gifts we are given. While this book shows more of his vulnerability, both physically and emotionally, it did nothing to diminish my admiration of this wonderful man. What a National Treasure!!Now I come to the author, Candice Millard. As I continued reading the book I was amazed over and over again at the sheer amount of research and the amount of talent it took to put all these facts into a cohesive and very entertaining story!!I wholeheartedly recommend this book!!!!!! Five stars to the story, itself. Five stars to the author. Five stars to Theodore Roosevelt. My only regret is I was given the option of just five stars.

I am going to preface this review by saying that I have a general disdain for graphic novels. There was a time that I would never elect to read one of my own volition. That all changed when I was assigned Maus for an English class. Upon hearing that our syllabus included a graphic novel, I groaned in tacit protest. I read both volumes of Maus cover to cover before the assigned completion date, and was very moved by the story, which is about a son trying to understand his Holocaust-survivor father. There are no images of humans in this book--the Jews are portrayed as mice, the Nazis as cats, and the Poles as pigs. I rarely read graphic novels or comics, but found this a very interesting read. The author has found a very clever way to write a feature-length comic-book novel, telling an accessible mini-history of his father's experiences during the WWII Holocaust in Poland (his father and mother being survivors of the camps), intermingled with a second "current-day" story line illustrating his father's current domestic challenges and the author's own, sometimes fraught relationship with him.The story is extremely easy to understand and follow when laid out this way, even though I already knew most of this from a more general historical perspective. Showing different nationalities as different animals is a clever way to help keep the players straight.I strongly disagree with the criticism leveled by other reviewers that try to assign some significance to the animals chosen for each nationality, My own belief is that the only choice meant to convey any real meaning was that of showing Jewish characters as mice and Nazis as cats, illustrating the relative "power" that the cats had over the mice, and the fact that the "mice" were always being hunted and could not even safely walk on streets where there were "cats." The one or two French were shown as frogs, the Americans were dogs, and the Poles were pigs. Those who believe the author somehow intended any of these to be broader comments on those nationalities, for better or worse, are just reading too much into it. In particular, showing Poles as pigs was not intended to be an insult, and those who think otherwise are just looking for reasons to be offended.Some of the comic illustrations were very inventive. At some points in the story, the author's father is walking around in Poland amongst the general population (outside the Jewish ghetto, that is), and acting as though he belongs there, knowing that it will not be easy to tell he is Jewish if he acts like he belongs there; in effect, he is "masquerading" as a Pole, and the cartoons of these scenes show him with a pig mask over his normally mouse face, showing that he is passing for a Pole.Certainly nothing about the Holocaust is anything to laugh at, and in fact, in most treatments on the subject, too much detail can sometimes overwhelm a reader. The author suspends his father's narrative at regular intervals and cuts to their present-day conversation, where they talk about his father's domestic situation, his health, his personal frugality and other habits, etc. This is a mini-drama all my itself that at times can almost be amusing, and gives the reader a periodic break from the heavier part of the story. You can also see how certain ways that his father behaves have been influenced by his experience.This is a interesting way to learn about a part of history that too many these days seem to be strangely unaware of. (When I was growing up, everyone knew about this.) It is easily read and understood, and even at almost 300 pages, I read it in less than a day.

During the times the father recounts his, and his wife's, life in Poland and in Auschwitz, I almost felt like I was there. Touching, frightening and revealing this is one of those books that should be required reading in our educational system. As time goes by, and more and more concentration camp survivors pass away, I fear that the story of man's greatest inhumanity to man will also pass away. The story of the Holocaust, the people, the unbelievable circumstances that allowed it to happen, is something that must not be forgotten. The saying "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" is very true and the thought of this happening again is unfathomable.We, the human race, have had other similar events happen more recently; Rwanda, Cambodia's Killing Fields, and so on are not as publicized as the Holocaust but they are just as horrible. Those stories need to be added to ones like Maus to show that these things can, and will, happen if we don't take steps to stop them. Knowledge is the key and this book is one tool in our toolbox of knowledge. Experience it and NEVER FORGET.

I have been meaning to get this book and its sequel for many years. I bought it recently for my grandson and read both books before giving it to him. This is a very personal account of the holocaust. The members of my family who survived all left in the mid thirties. None of the rest survived, so this description of what it was like inside the area of German control was a first for me. As a graphic novel, this is a complex art form combining visual and verbal components. I'm not a comic book fan, nor did I read many when I was a child. But I found this format intriguing. I learned a lot and the format stimulated a lot of thinking.
