Henkes's vision of friendship captures the essence of the childlike; his mice live in a sunny, imaginative world mixed with secure routines and the safety of known factors. The story unwinds at a deliberate pace; every sentence is either downright funny or dense with playful, deadpan humor. The artist/author, as always, gently grants room for differences between people (the turnaround in A Weekend with Wendell , for example, and the reconciliation between Wedge and his stepfather in Two Under Par ). About the Author

Elizabeth Ann Maharaj is an Associate Professor in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics at Monash University, Australia. She has a Ph.D. from Monash University on the Pattern Recognition of Time Series. Ann is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), a member of the International Association of Statistical Computing (IASC) and of the Statistical Society of Australia (SSA). She is also an accredited statistician with the SSA. Ann’s main research interests are in time series classification, wavelets analysis, fuzzy classification and interval time series analysis. She has also worked on research projects in climatology, environmental science, labour markets, human mobility and finance. Pierpaolo D'Urso is a Full Professor of Statistics at Sapienza - University of Rome. He is the chair of the Department of Social and Economic Sciences, Sapienza - University of Rome. He received his Ph.D. in Statistics and his bachelor's degree in Statistics both from Sapienza. He is an associate editor and a member of the editorial board of several journals. He has been member of several program committees of international conferences and guest editor of special issues. His recent research activity is focus on fuzzy clustering, clustering and classification of time series, clustering of complex structures of data, and statistical methods for marketing, local labour systems, electoral studies and environmental monitoring. Jorge Caiado has a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics to Economics and Management. He is a Professor of Econometrics and Forecasting Methods at the Lisbon School of Economics and Management (ISEG) and a Researcher at the Centre for Applied Mathematics and Economics. His research in econometrics, finance, time series analysis, forecasting methods and statistical software has led to numerous publications in scientific journals and books. This might make for a great reference tool for someone with a decent foundation to work from, but I wouldn't recommend this as an actual introductory teaching tool. The formatting and accessibility, in addition to the poor variety of example problems with often vague explanations, leave much to be desired.

While comprehensive, the book has little in the way of helping a practicing ChemE apply the knowledge. A couple of chapters that I consulted fall short of explaining how the myriad formulas will have to be chained together to solve a real life problem. I do appreciate its completeness though.

This book is much cheaper than the hardcover not only because of the material, but because it is the international edition. The text is the same but all of the problems are different than the American edition. If you are buying this for a class, make sure to buy the American edition or find a friend who did.

The book makes no effort to actually teach the material. It seems like the authors just wanted to flaunt their knowledge. Example problems are usually incomplete or vague. On the e-book you can't zoom into the page, only change the text size. This makes it easy to lose your place. Diagrams and equations also don't load correctly. You also don't get page numbers. Ultimately this is more confusing than helpful when learning the material.

This is an Asian edition (by Pearson) of an excellent textbook. Relative to the U.S. edition, the chapters are reproduced exactly, but the Asian Edition is softcover and, further, the quality of the paper is not up to snuff, which is a real demerit for a hefty book of almost 900 pages. The U.S. edition of the book (by Prentice-Hall), which I also own, is hardcover and of outstanding quality in all respects.That said, this book has an almost encyclopedic coverage of the most important concepts for practicing chemical engineers. There are many numerical examples throughout the book, and the book's website contains some very useful material (e.g., spreadsheets) that are valuable for demonstrating the methodology for implementing some quite complex thermodynamic methods.Professors Elliott and Lira are to be congratulated for providing a very thoughtful and well-written textbook that should provide a solid foundation for one of the most important pillars of the chemical engineering profession. Thermodynamics is not for the faint of heart and a serious study of this book should demystify many of the concepts that often cause confusion, at least at the undergraduate level.Practicing engineers, especially those that use process simulators, will welcome the clear exposition of the concepts and underlying algorithms for all the major methods and procedures, especially for hydrocarbon systems (equations of state) and chemical systems (activity coefficients). The sections on reaction equilibria, simultaneous phase and chemical equilibria, and electrolyte mixture thermodynamics are also very well written and offer much useful advice and valuable insights.

Needed for summer classes

This book is good and has a minimal number of errors. The only thing about it is that there is so much material included and is such a dense, dry read. Kept putting me to sleep not even halfway through the various chapters. Would recommend though.

Well written and organized text book. One of my favorites so far.
